We’ve compiled a list of things we know about the film adaptation of The BFG:
- It will be directed by Steven Spielberg. John Madden was originally planned to direct the film but was busy with the sequel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Madden is an executive producer for The BFG.
- The film is planned to be released in 2016. Spielberg is likely to shoot an untitled Cold War thriller first, followed by The BFG.
- Melissa Mathison has written the screenplay for the film. She previously worked with Spielberg on E.T.
- The film will be live action, unlike the 1989 animated version, Spielberg’s adaptation will feature actors.
- DreamWorks acquired the rights to the book in 2011.
- The Roald Dahl Estate is delighted! They said: “We are delighted that Steven Spielberg will bring his inventive genius to directing the story of The BFG and that Roald Dahl’s beloved story and characters will be brought to the screen in 2016 – a year when we will be celebrating 100 years since Roald Dahl’s birth!

The BBC has confirmed rumours that an Esio Trot movie is to be produced. Following speculation, the BBC yesterday announced they will produce a movie adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic Esio Trot. Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench were also confirmed to be playing the lead roles: Mr Hoppy and Mrs Silver. The film will be directed by Dearbhla Walsh, who has previously directed the Emmy-winning Little Dorritt and soap opera Eastenders. The screenplay has been written by Richard Curtis. Filming will begin next Spring.
