Stricken Actress Patricia Neal Gives Birth To Baby Girl

OXFORD, England (UPI) — Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal, who is recovering from a triple stroke,
gave birth today to a “perfect” baby girl.

A spokesman for the 39-year-old actress said the 6-pound 7-ounce girl —Miss Neal’s fifth child — was born at Radcliffe infirmary at 8:22 a.m.

Miss Neal is the wife of British writer Roald Dahl.

Dahl was present at the birth today. The spokesman said “everything’s perfect.”

The spokesman said Miss Neal probably will remain in the hospital for about 10 days. He said no name has yet been selected for the baby.

Miss Neal was already pregnant when she suffered a triple stroke in Hollywood in February. She was in a coma for three weeks following a seven-hour operation.

Partly paralyzed and wearing steel-and-leather braces on her right leg, she came to England in May determined to have her baby.

“My sickness did not damage the baby in any way,” she said. “And I want to have it.”

She said before entering the hospital that she would like to have a boy “but I’d be happy with a girl.”

Miss Neal and her husband, a former British Air Force pilot, have a home at nearby Great Missenden. They
have three other living children, Tess, 8; Theo, 5, and Ophelia, 15 months. Their first-born daughter, Olivia died in 1962 at the age of 7.
